During this 17-day tour, you'll have the chance to discover the most important cities in Cambodia, such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, as well as the the most untouched and pristine natural areas, as the ones surrounded by Cardamom Mountains range.
Have you ever heard of the Cardamom Mountains? This wild mountain range is located in the northeast of Cambodia and is still largely unexplored. If you are a nature and trekking lover, you'll find out that this vacation has been truly designed for you! On some nights during the tour you'll sleep in hammocks under mosquito nets, lighted by stars. You'll wake up at dawn to the cry of gibbons in order to enjoy the local flora and fauna as much as possible. On other nights, you'll sleep in guest houses of remote villages, where you can meet local people and understand their traditions and culture.
It will be an holiday and vacation rich in emotions, which will give you unforgettable memories. The highlights of your tour in Cambodia are:
Arrival in Siem Reap, located between the famous ruins of Angkor Wat and the suggestive Tonle Sap Lake. Check-in to the hotel and overnight.
The whole day is devoted to the discovery of Angkor temples, which are still partially hidden in the jungle. Angkor is the most important archaeological site in the country and boasts hundreds of Hindu and Buddhist temples. Undoubtedly, the most famous and suggestive temple is Angkor Wat, built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II. It is recognized as the world's widest religious complex and the higher expression of khmer classic art.
Today we'll move among Angkor's wonderful temples by bike. In this way, we can admire most of the temples included in the site and the most important features of this Unesco World Heritage Site. Worth visiting are: Bayon, also known as temple with four faces, Preah Khan, the abandoned temple of Ta Nei, Ta Keo and Ta Prohm. At the end of the city, we'll head back to the city. Overnight in Siem Reap.
Enjoy a panoramic tour of Siem Reap by bike. Discover the less trafficked streets in the center.
Tonle Sap, declared Biosphere reserve by Unesco in 1997, is the largest not salty lake in the South-Eastern part of Asia and a real attraction of Cambodia. Today we'll enjoy a boat excursion on its waters discovering colourful floating villages where it is possible to observe daily life moments.
Let's enjoy a cruise on Sangker River, that leads us from Siem Reap to Battambang, rich in colonial heritage, including the famous Governor's Residence.
Today we'll move from Battambang to Pursat, where we'll spend the night in a floating village.
Today we'll reach Osoam, at the feet of Cardamom Mountains range. Osoam is a small community located between Crocodile Protection Sanctuary and Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary, mainly inhabited by indigenous populations, named Chorng and Poer.
Early morning, we'll put the backpack on and trek to the heart of the Cardamom Mountains. We'll discover an ancient pagoda and temple overlooking a small valley. The vegetation gets denser and the path continues towards the crocodile valley. Siamese crocodiles are on the verge of extinction and a conservation programme for these animals has been set up in this valley. Feel privileged and serene in this breathtaking panorama, buffaloes and rare species of birds.
In the evening, camp and hammocks are set up. Later, hike to the river to watch birds. Take binoculars to get a close watch. Surrounded by an unforgettable environment, in osmosis with nature, dinner is served.
At dawn breakfast is ready. After tidying the camp, only footprints remain. Trekking continues on the other side of the mountain to reach our car. Drive on the west coast of the range to descend towards the shore. The car stops and trekking resumes to reach sea level and the Koh Po River. With us are only a boat and its captain. Trek upstream along the River Po to explore this peaceful setting between the mountains and the sea.
After reaching an island in the middle of the river, the camp is set up. Sunset on the island. Dinner under the stars. Overnight in a hammock under a mosquito net (igloo tent also available, on request). At dusk, our guide organises a hike, a small trip through time and space, below the stars, admiring firefly-filled trees, fluorescent plankton in the river. Nature, as in a fairy tale, reveals its wonders.
Today we'll reach Koh Kong, on the estuary of Koh Po River.
Free time at leisure for individual visits of Koh Kong, located just 10 km from Thailand's border. Overnight in a bungalow.
We'll depart from Koh Kong to reach Chi Phat, the largest virgin forest of Cardamom Mountains. Here, it is possible to observe both natural beauties, as scenic peaks and mangroves swamps, and cultural artifacts, like burial jars and wooden coffins. Visitors can hike along forest trails and meet warm and friendly village people. Overnight in a home stay.
In the morning, moto-taxis wait to take us to the starting point of our trek in the Cardamoms. After a few minutes’ ride on the motorbikes, a large glade opens in the tropical forest. This site is a perfect place for watching numerous species of animals, such as hornbills, deer and wild pigs, to name the most common. Our local guide introduces the fauna and flora. Many gibbons live in this forest and sometimes they can be heard, but seeing one is not so easy.
The hike continues through lush forest, along paths made by wild elephants. We stop for lunch near a welcoming river to take a dip. Mid-afternoon the riverbanks are reached and the camp has already been set by our cook and boat captain. Swimming in the river after hours spent in the forest is more than welcome! Dinner is prepared and on the menu is barbecued fish. Surrounded by the flora and fauna of the Cardamoms, this place is both peaceful and lively. Camping in hammocks with mosquito nets. (3 h hike / + 80 m).
Trips to Chi Phat may be changed depending on the season (monsoon, lack of access and slippery conditions).
Transfer to Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia.
Free time at leisure to be spent in Phnom Penh.
Check-out from the hotel and end of services.
When trekking, it is recommended to use boot- type shoes in order to protect the ankle and the malleolus in order to prevent twists or sprains. The sole must be notched and slightly rigid. The front of the foot must be protected against shocks and rocks.
