- Tour
This 9-day tour will make you explore the magical southern Cape by mountain bike: you'll experience one of South Africa’s true wilderness areas and some of its last indigenous forests. After crossing the Outeniqua Mountains, you will get to the spectacular Indian Ocean village of Victoria Bay. The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve is a World heritage site with its rich natural diversity and history. There is no better way to explore this isolated gem of South Africa than on a mountain bike. You'll cover a total distance of 450 km and daily rides will be between 45 km and 90 km, and will include a designated lunch stop. Shared accommodation while camping will be in comfortable "dome style" tents. This tour is of course aimed at the experienced and fit mountain biker so bring your own bicycle or rent one from us.
Arrive by own arrangement in Port Elizabeth: the guide will meet you at the airport at 1 pm. You will be transferred with vehicle and trailer to the frontier town of Patensie.
Breakfast. You'll set off for your morning cycle. After the lunch stop and siesta, you'll spend the afternoon cycling. You'll arrive at Kudu Kaya set-up camp and explore the wonderful pools in the Ysrivier. You'll end the day with a unique dinner around the fire.
After coffee, tea and rusks, you'll depart on your morning cycle and finally enter amazing Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve. You'll cycle up to Bergplaas and enjoy its beautiful views. You'll then descend to Doodsklip and have a picnic lunch. Tonight you'll sleep in a natural overhang or cave at Bakkrans and have dinner around the fire. Before going to bed, you'll spend some time gazing the stars in the African sky.
After breakfast, you'll set off for your cycling journey. En-route we'll stop at the Seven Fountains and Fig Tree Forest. Our ride will take us along gravel roads in the Kloof between the majestic mountains and big private nature reserves and cattle farms. Enjoy swimming in a fresh mountain stream at lunchtime.
After an early start and breakfast, you'll cycle through the Baviaanskloof Key and up the Nuwekloof Pass. After lunch, you'll cover the last stretch to Uniondale, a long sweeping downhill. You'll arrive in the city to a cold beer and warm bed.
After enjoying breakfast on the hotel’s verandah, you'll depart from Uniondale and set off on a short ascent of the Prince Alfred’s Pass before we hit the fast downhill to the tiny hamlet of De Rust. Upon arrival at the campsite, take a dip in the river or grab a drink and a chat with the interesting owners.
