Macedonia - Useful information for your trip

Macedonia is a European country located in the Balkan Peninsula. The territorial structure is characterized mainly by mountains and hills and the weather is temperate. The territory has a rough shape with deep basins and valleys, located between the Šar and Rhodope around Vardar Valley. The main lakes are three, Lake Ohrid, Lake Prespa and Lake Dojran. The region is seismic and very active, with frequent earthquakes.

In the past, Macedonia went through periods of instability, passing under the control of many states and ancient empires. Only on 8 September 1991 did it declare its independence from Yugoslavia, which was recognized nearly two years later. Today Macedonia is a parliamentary republic with Skopje as a capital.

More than 7% of the Macedonian territory is protected. In the Republic of Macedonia is in fact there are three national parks (Pelister, Mavrovo and Mount Galichica), 4 strict nature reserves, 3 protected landscapes, 14 areas with particular native flora or fauna, 33 areas declared natural monuments.

The country's economy is underdeveloped due to the lack of appropriate infrastructure and a free market. But tourism in the country is growing, thanks to its natural beauty. Renowned and well-known is Lake Ohrid, recognized in 1979 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
