This itinerary will make you visit the two most important monasteries in Mongolia and its most beautiful lake, Khuvsgul, as well as the smaller Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. Huge forests dominate the landscape of Northern Mongolia and you will have the chance to drive through grasslands of Central Mongolia too. 

Please note that nights in the steppes can be very cold even in summer. Sunscreen and hat, as well as mosquito repellent and raincoat are essential. Since you will drive for up to 8 hours a day, a good level of fitness is required.

    Arrival in Ulaan Baatar
    Day 1

    You leave your country with a scheduled flight, spend the night on board and arrive in Ulaan Baatar the following morning.

    Day 2

    At the airport you will carry on the customs procedures and at the exit you will be received by your local guide that will bring you to the hotel. In the afternoon you will visit the capital, with its Sukhebaatar square and Bogd Khan Palace , built between 1893 and 1903, where the last Mongol king Javzan Damba Hutagt VIII lived.

    This complex of temples contains many Buddhist works of art and the private collection of personal belongings and clothes of the king.

    Ulaan Baatar
    Day 3

    Today you will visit the Buddhist Gandan Monastery, that is the most important temple in Mongolia , and you will have the chance to attend the morning prayers. Inside the Gandan complex there is the Migjid Janraisag temple, where you can see the huge gilded statue of Buddha Migjid Janraisag.

    After that you will go to Choijin Lama Museum: the ancient house of the main lama (Luvsan Haidav Choijin) is now a museum with a rich collection of Buddhist art. Later on, you can learn more on different people and history of this country going to the National History Museum.

    Amarbaysgalant Monastery
    Day 4

    The trip outside the capital starts today with a visit to the impressive Amarbaysgalant Monastery, the best-preserved temple in Mongolia. Built between 1727 and 1737 in Chinese style, the temple is dedicated to Zanabazar, the great Buddhist sculptor.

    Day 5

    Today you will drive towards the town of Moron and stop in Bulgan.

    Moron and Khuvsgul lake
    Day 6

    Today you will get to Moron and Khuvsgul lake. Snow-covered mountains and deep forests surround this crystal-clear lake. In May and September you might even encounter the reindeer-people who spend the winter on the lakeshores.

    Khuvsgul lake
    Day 7

    You will spend the entire day explore Khuvsgul lake. If you like, you can enjoy optional activities such as horse -riding or a boat trip.

    Khorgo volcano
    Day 8

    Through the mountains of Northern Mongolia you will continue today to the impressive Khorgo Volcano. A short trek will bring you to the crater-rim, which is 200 m wide and 100 m deep. Torrents of lava from Khorgo Volcano blocked the Terkh River, thus forming the beautiful Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, home to many rare species of birds.

    Khorgo volcano and Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake
    Day 9

    Today you'll go trekking to crater rim of Khorgo Volcano and explore Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake.

    Taikhar Chuluut
    Day 10

    On your way towards the East the landscape changes and mountains turn into endless grasslands. You will visit a mysterious pinnacle of granite, the Taikhar Chuluut, rising 25 meters high from the flat grassland on the shores of Tamir River.

    Kharkhorin
    Day 11

    On this day you will arrive in Kharakorum or Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of Chinggis Khaan. The stones of the city have been used to build Mongolia 's biggest monastery, Erdene Zuu. A wall of 108 white stupas surrounds the complex. Of once more than 60 buildings, only 3 have been preserved from the Cultural Revolution in the 1930's. The temple is now again active and you might have the chance to see a ceremony in the main prayer-hall.

    Kharkhorin -Bayangobi
    Day 12

    Today you'll drive from Kharkhorin to Bayangobi,a unique place where you can find a combination of three different landscapes: desert, steppe and forest-steppe.

    Bayangobi - Hustai National Park
    Day 13

    On this day you'll visit Hustain Nuruu National Reserve: in this forest steppe zone you can see “Przewalski” horses, the last true wild horses in the world.

    Hustai - Ulaan Baatar

    Today, while driving back to Ulaan Baatar you can seize the occasion to see many other marvellous landscapes. Once in the capital, you will have the afternoon free for shopping (cashmere factory, department stores, etc). Before dinner you may attend a folklore show.
