Paths twisting and turning through the enchanting nature of Central Balkan National Park and Boatin Reserve, where it is possible to find some European rare animal species. This trekking tour develops along the longest mountain of Bulgaria: Koprivshtitsa, which gives the name to the whole peninsula.

During the first days of the tour, you'll enjoy a light trek in the lowest parts of the mountain, discovering amazing villages and monasteries. This travel experience requires a good fitness level, since some parts of the hike are very long and, sometimes it is necessary to carry the luggage.

Historical sights:

  • Central Balkan National Park (716 sqkm) it was established to preserve the unique nature of this mountain range. A third of the park includes nine reserves, among which Boatin, Tsarichina, Steneto and Dzhendema are part of the Unesco Biosphere Reserve;
  • The viallge Ribaritsa, which is a nice mountain place with many villas and country houses;
  • The Monastery of Glozhene built in the XII century by the Ukrainian prince Glozh, hosting an icon of about 1000 years;
  • Koprivstitsa, an historical city and architectonical reserve. It has been capable to preserve the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Renaissance.

    Sofia - Golyam Izvor
    Day 1

    Arrival in Sofia and transfer to the village of Golyam Izvor (90 km away). Overnight in a guest house.

    Golyam Izvor - Monastero Glozhen - Teteven
    Day 2

    The day starts trekking from the periphery of the village to Glozhen Monastery, built on an high cliff overlooking Vit Valley. Then, you'll descend passing through an old beech forest at the foot of the mountain. Transfer by car to Teteven (415 m a.s.l.). Accommodation in the hotel.

    The afternoon is devoted to a trek to Cherven Mount (1221 m a.s.l.), to the north of the city. The path starts in Teteven, passes through forests and green fields and leads up to the rocky mountain, from which it is possible to enjoy a breath-taking view on the city and the river valley. From this point, you'll continue along a new eco-trail, which will take you to Babintsi village. Descend to Teteven village.

    Teteven - Ribaritsa - Divchovoto
    Day 3

    Short transfer to Ribaritsa village (550 m a.s.l.). First, the path passes through an area rich in country houses and wide fields cutted by the river Kostina, then it reaches the place in which the Bulgarian revolutionary Georgi Benkovski died. From this point, following a dirt track and then a path into the forest, you'll enter the reserve of Boatin reaching Divchovoto village (700 m a.s.l.). Accommodation in the hotel and overnight.

    Divchovoto - Polyana Momina
    Day 4

    Mountain trip. The path passes through beech forests up to the hut Polyana Momina (1740 m a.s.l.). Overnight.

    Polyana Momina - Mount Vezhen
    Day 5

    Today you'll enjoy the longest trek. First the path passes through beech forests, then it starts to ascend the mountain. You'll reach Baba Mount (2070 m a.s.l.), from which you'll descend up to Popovi Grobove. Here you can choose between two options:

    Option A: You'll continue to descend gradually and at the end of the day you'll reach the Vezhen hut. This option is suggested in case of adverse weather conditions.
    Ascend / descend: 900 m / 1100 m

    Option B: This path is longest but more interesting. The trail follows the mountain and reaches some peaks and small passages, where risk of avalanches is high during the winter. You'll reach Mount Vezhen (2198 m a.s.l.) before descending to the hut (1650 m a.s.l.)
    Ascent / descent: 1100 m / 1200 m

    Mount Vezhen - Mount Yumruka
    Day 6

    From hut Vezhen you'll ascend Mount Kamenica, where the path follows the ridge avoiding high peaks. At the end, you'll reach Yumruka Mount and Eho hut (1675 m a.s.l.). The hut is located on the ridge and is not accessible by car. It is suggested to bring the necessary things for two days.

    Mount Yumruka - Koprivshtitsa
    Day 7

    Today's path descends down to the opposite side of the mountain, the trail starts in Eho hut and ends in Rosino village (550 m a.s.l.). Here, the car will wait for you with your luggage. Transfer to Koprivshtitsa.

    Koprivshtitsa is the most important and beautiful city of the whole Bulgarian Reinassance. Its characteristical architecture shows colourful houses, curvy streets, and ancient churches, which recall the spirit of old Bulgaria. In the middle of the 19th century, the economic and spiritual progress of Koprivshtitsa transformed the city into a symbol for the whole country. Revolutionaries, such as Todor Kableshkov and George Benkovski, writers, such as Naiden Gerov and Lyuben Karavelov, and poets, such as Dimcho Debelyanov were born here. Their houses are opened to guests.
