Hungary - Useful information for your trip

Hungary is a landlocked country member of the European Union, situated in Central Europe, with Budapest as a capital city, Its territory occupies a wide portion of the northern part of the Pannonian plain and is thus mainly flat. The country is crossed by the Danube, separating the regions of Transdanubia to the west and the Great Hungarian Plain or Alföld to the east.

The northern area is mountainous with rather low peaks, the highest being mount Kékes (1014 m). The main rivers in Hungary are the Danube, Tisza and Drava. Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe and is situated in the western part of the country.

Hungary has a continental climate with snowy winters and sultry summers and rainfalls mainly in spring and autumn. As for the environment, in the northern mountainous areas it's easy to view deer and boar. In the flat area oak, beech and hardwood in general grow.

Economy is mainly based on agriculture and livestock. Hungarians grow vegetables, cereals, fruit, grapes, hemp, tobacco, linen and red peppers, and they breed horses, sheep and cattle.
Hungary is the second largest producer of foie gras and the largest exporter.

Industry is sufficiently developed, especially around Budapest. Industries are mainly mechanical, chemical and pharmaceutical, but Hungarians also extract bauxite, lignite, natural gas.The tertiary sector is based ultimately on transport and tourism. The transport network is very advanced, with highways and railways branching off from the capital.

During a vacation in Budapest it's impossible not to remain speechless in front of the beauty of the capital city, the Parliament palace and the Chain bridge; but also a cruise in the Danube is not to be missed, admiring the quaint towns on the shores, or the exploration of magnificent lake Balaton. Finally, palaces and castles, so full of history and traditions, are also worth a visit: they are spread all around the country.
