Hanoi - Hoa Lu - Ninh Binh
    Day 6

Breakfast early in the morning. It takes about two and a half hour journey on the South road to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh and then Hoa Lu, the historic site which was the capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1010.

Once the sea dotted with islets and rocks reached here until the alluvium brought by the river covered the marine expanse. Thus an incredible landscape formed, where out of the vast plains of rice paddies plowed by a quiet stream craggy rock formations emerge, not unlike those that farther north create the incredible scenery of Ha-long bay.

Rowing boat sail up the river until this seems to disappear into a horizontal crack that cuts the base of a massive block of stone. Here you enter the first of the three caves, Tam Coc. You'll return to the light but then two more times the river plunges into the darkness of other caves until the navigation ends in an amazing natural amphitheater where the green rocky peaks encircle a lake with reeds and rice fields.

Little remains of the ancient capital except some traces of the walls but one of the monumental portals that once gave access to the royal town was reconstructed. The memory of the ancient rulers is kept still intact in the grandiose and impressive dynastic temple of Dinh rebuilt to honor their memory in the second half of the seventeenth century on the ruins of much older buildings. Lunch at the local restaurant. Dinner in hotel.
